Buying A New Car- Where to go and not to go. (Another Adventure with My Friend "Coupon")

If you have been listening to the radio or watching WPTZ news you are likely familiar with the local dealership that features "Two Good Looking Guys" that ends with "Does a Reindeer BLEEP (insert bodily function word) Snow?" This dealership has an excellent service and parts department but their sales staff (with the exception of a few...Shout out to The Heonis brothers- Thanks for not blowing smoke and being very helpful!) is a nightmare.  Add to it the fact that they are led by a smooth talking "good looking guy"- the giant of the "good looking guy duo" and the situation is pretty dismal.  This business obviously has internal control issues given the recent theft of 4 (yes FOUR) vehicles by one of their lead sales employees.  I have been working on this "How To Buy A Vehicle The Coupon Clipper Way" for some time, but today the Reindeer commercial was on and a high gloss sales ad came in the mail.  I figured it was high time to post this, just in case anyone is looking to make a high ticket vehicle purchase anytime soon.

This summer I went on a little vacation with a good friend.  For purposes of this post we'll call her Coupon.  Anyone who knows either of us personally already knows the greatest adventure our vacation included.  We negotiated one of the best car transactions I have been involved in. From a thousand miles away! While we shopped and lounged on the beach!  To appreciate this feat let me share a few details.
  • Our initial car buying adventure started at "The Good Looking Guy" dealership.  Every transaction has to go through Sasquatch.  He is the deal sealer or flubber.  He likes to use big words he does not comprehend and likes to fill the hero role by getting you into a vehicle for your target payment per month price point.  THIS IS NEVER A GOOD SIGN!  Then he uses high pressure tactics ("This APR can change in a nano second. HURRY UP AND SIGN A CONTRACT!".  "This is the best used vehicle we've had in (Since the wall of china was built). It's going to fly out of the lot! HURRY UP AND SIGN A CONTRACT!".  If he throws around the terms "Niche Market" while trying to low ball you with a trade in value; he got it from me.  Ask him what it means.  Maybe by now he can explain that not everyone will want your 1969 muscle car trade in and it will be hard for him to move it off the lot.  Sasquatch refuses to sit down to run and work the numbers crunch on paper.  He focuses on monthly payment amount, not what goes into getting to that monthly payment amount. GAME OVER RUN FROM LOT!
  • The next adventure led New Shiny Subaru Dealership in town.  Here they did not blow smoke, but again high pressure to buy something that won't be around for long.  Great lesson in LISTEN TO YOUR HEART and SLEEP ON IT!  Should you be in a rush to buy or are they just in a rush to sell?   If the answers are not "NO!"....RUN!  Let the next shopper "score the deal".  There is another deal waiting for you!
  • We went on vacation with no intention of shopping for a car, but when a simple online search for a USED vehicle turned up a crazy deal not too far from home we called for more information.  Enter the king of Subarus- Mr. Frank Whipple!  This man is a blessing and breath of fresh air.  Just chatting with him brings about visions of Fred Rogers bringing you for a guided tour of the factory and feeding you warm fuzzies by the bushel basket.
By following these simple rules we were able to:
  • Save time not running from dealership to dealership
  • Score a brand new vehicle that met every want and need on the "wish list"
  • Dump an undesirable trade in
  • Save a significant pile of coin by paying MUCH less in tax
  • Lower Coupon's monthly payment to a lower than target monthly amount without extending the term of the loan.  THERE IS NO POINT TO LOWER PAYMENT IF YOU HAVE TO MAKE MORE OF THEM!
Must Dos for getting the BEST DEAL
  • You want all of the numbers.  What is the vehicle worth? What is the MSRP? What is the invoice amount? What kind of kickbacks does the dealership earn for average volume?
All of these factors play significant roles.  If the dealership is not willing to share the information, choose not to share your transaction with them.  Frank Whipple Shares, Dan from Parker's Shares, Joe from Knight's shares. Find one of them or someone like them and it is a win-win!
  • What can the dealership do to up the value of your trade in? Are there dealership incentives or rebates that can be shifted and called "trade in"?
Personally I want to save and don't care what the source of savings come in.  In this case, upping the trade in value by applying dealership incentives to that number, shaved another significant sum off of the grand total.  It is legal and it is super fun! I highly recommend demanding this trick.
  • Don't Rush!
  • Never go car shopping with the mind set of "I'm driving a new car home today".
  • Don't be afraid to "waste the sales reps time".
  • This is a service industry and your business is earned. They need you, you do not need them!
  • You do not owe a sales person a sale for "running numbers" and blowing smoke.
  • Don't be fooled by "good looks".
  • Be swept off your feet by honesty, logic, and professionalism.
  • Look out for Sasquatches! They are everywhere and build a relationship with the Fred Roger's types that are still out there.
Check back later for an exciting post all about Mr. Frank Whipple.  He wins sales person of the year as far as I am concerned.  His dealership grew to be the largest "certified pre-owned dealership in the country" because they still believe in customer service.

Blogging For Books- God Gave Us So Much Review

I was thrilled to join the Multnomah Publishers blogging for books program a week ago.  I was shocked at how fast they sent me my first selection!  Here is my review;

Book Information:  God Gave Us So Much: A Limited-Edition Three-Book Treasury by Lisa T. Bergren and Laura J. Bryant (Hardcover - Aug 10, 2010)

Product Details (From Amazon):
  • Reading level: Ages 4-8
  • Hardcover: 112 pages
  • Publisher: WaterBrook Press; 1 edition (August 10, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0307446298
  • ISBN-13: 978-0307446299
Book Review:
God Gave us so Much combines three books in one: God Gave us the World, God Gave us Love, and God Gave us Heaven. Each book features Little Cub and her adventures as she learns about God by asking her Mama, Grandpa, and Papa questions.  Little Cub has lots of questions.  Her little mind wonders about differences, different types of love and everlasting life.

Laura Bryant's artwork is beautiful and captivating.  From a language standpoint, I was able to use her illustrations to pose questions about basic concepts (propositions, basic concepts, 5Ws). Her illustrations are full of color and detail.

Lisa Tawn Bergren teaches important spiritual and life lessons throughout the book. The first book God Gave Us The World  is a touching story that teaches children to take care of the worldly gifts God has given to us.  In The Second, God Gave Us Love, we learn that God wants us to show everyone his love.  The annoying otter family provides a good concrete example of how God calls us to love others when they are not so lovable.  While there is no plot to the stories, there is a lovely dialogue that kept my daughter focused and hooked.  Some critics feel that plot is a missing element, but like the great works of Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle, these books serve to teach.  Concepts are beautifully presented and reinforced in many ways.  Lessons are taught in a beautiful way.   If you are looking for perfect grammar as a model for language development you will not find it here, but I think that is also an important lesson.  Little Cub does not use perfect standard American English.  My child can certainly relate to that.  This is another opportunity to teach that differences are ok.

This book would make an amazing  gift and it easily provides an avenue for opening discussions about God, life, and morals.

This book will be a permanent fixture on my daughter's book shelf!

A Primer In Price Matching- Target Edition

If you think Target coupon shopping is fun (I do! I do!), price matching will really make your frugal heart go pitter patter!!

How to Do It:
  • Target will price match any product they sell if it appears in a print ad.
  • You have to bring the entire competitor's flyer with you. (one page or a clipped ad will not work).
  • The competitor must have a location within 50 miles of the Target you visit.
  • DO NOT take the flyer and desired item to the regular check out. (Well you can, but only if you are asking for a miserable check out experience.  Coupon Chris does not embrace the whole concept and if he is anywhere in the front end he will be at the register butting around.)
  • Take the item and the ad to the customer service desk and request an adjustment.  Pay for the price matched items there, then checkout at the regular checkout if you have other items.
Ready for a rocking good deal?
  • Walgreen's is selling Rice Krispies for $1.99 each this week.
  • Grab your Wags flyer and head to target.
  • There is a Target coupon out for FREE Kraft or Market Pantry Marshmallows when you buy 2 Rice Krispies! Grab that at target.com (bottom of page under coupons)
  • Visit http://www.coupons.com/ to print a $2/2 Rice Krispie coupon.
  • Buy (2) Rice Krispies Cereal = $4 hand them both coupons.
  • Final Price = $2 for 2 Boxes of Cereal & 1 Bag of Marshmallows!

dust cover.  As usual, I digress....Look at this deal-

$144.80 marked down from $269.99.  What appliance will last over 5 generations? A KitchenAid!

Homemade For The Heart- Snowball and Tree Light Cookie Bars and Ornament

I always feel like I need to post a disclaimer to go along with my craft projects.  I am not Martha, but I do try to do my best.  My crafts will not win a ribbon, let alone an honorable mention, but long after they are shared they will bring smiles and laughs.  My best girlfriends and I still wet our pants during fits of laughter when we recall the year I thought up the "Snowmen Out Of Tongue Depressors" project.  What better gift is there than laughter?  And my trials and tribulations in crafting seem to stir up fits of laughter for years to come.

What is on todays agenda? The Cookie Bar Component of These Lovely little gift kits I have created.

Here are the cast of Characters for today's project:
The Super Girl Cape is not in the cast of characters, but it looked festive.
List of Things You Need:
  • Two 1 gal. Ziplock Bags
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Graham Crackers (and something to pound them into fine crumbs)
  • Holiday M&Ms (Peanut are my favorite because they look like tree lights)
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
You can layer the ingredients in a Jar, but the cost is high and since most surveyed throw canning jars away I think Plastic bags are a better option.

1.  Prepare your "cone"- mark an arc as shown and cut below the line.  We do not want marker marks left when this step is done.

2.  Open up the Cone and place it in a large tumbler (I like the 16-20oz sizes).

3.  Place a package of Graham crackers in a baggie and pound them to crumbs.
4. Add 1/3 cup of crumbs to the waiting "cone"

5.  Measure 1/3 cup Brown Sugar (well packed).  Dump it into a cup to fluff before placing on top of the cracker crumbs in the "Cone".

6.  Add 1.5 cups of M&M Candies or Chocolate Chips to the "Cone"
7.  Twist and squeeze all of the air out of the cone.
8.  Tie the Cone off with festive ribbon.
9.  Prepare another Baggie and place it into the holding cup.
10.  Fill this cone with 1.5 cups of mini marshmallows.
11. Twist and tie off with festive ribbon.

I like to place the mixes in a small gift bag and affix baking instructions on the outside of the bag.

Here is What I use:

Snowball Christmas Light Cookie Bars

Dark Chocolate Peanut M&M Bars

• Combine ingredients of the bar mix bag with 1/2 cup of melted butter and 1 tsp. vanilla.

• Press mixture into 9-inch square baking pan.

• Place the marshmallows on top.

• Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

• Cool completely.

• Cut into bars and enjoy!

Check back tomorrow for a peek at my kits assembled.

Tomorrow's Homemade form the Heart will feature a how-to make a snowman out of a light bulb tutorial.

Enjoy!

So When are the 12 days of Christmas?

I think they are the 12 days after leading up to the feast of the three kings, but I always find the 12 days leading up to the holiday to be some what stress full and busy.  After Christmas- 12 days of Relaxation in the glow of the joyful holiday sounds just like what I need.  Truth be told, I am not done with the wrapping or the shopping.  This year I am trying to take everything in stride.  My grandmother (Marge) always made a big too do on "Little Christmas" (Epiphany).  There was another family meal and little gifts from "the Christmas mouse".  I am not sure where "the Christmas mouse" came from but I am quite sure it was a family fable (like the lunch box bandit who left twinkies and ding dongs in my lunch box.  Or like Chief Broken Bones and Squaw Fractured Femur who came down from the mountain to leave blood sausage (boudain) in our kitchen (we needed to eat it or fear a night time visit from the chief- he was known for being easily insulted.)  Can you  tell my father had a good imagination.  Tonight Emma and I looked through old Christmas decorations that my Grandmother passes along to us.  I am 100% they contain lead, I am 100% sure they will always make me smile.
What Is The Point Of This Post?
  • gather the ones you love and keep them close during this wonderful season.
  • share traditions or stories of Christmas past with your little ones.
  • love never dies, people do.  Take the love you have shared with a lost loved one and share it! They will live on in your home and heart.

Let's Play A Game Called "Crash JCPenny's Web Site"

This deal is not to be attempted if you are easily frustrated.  Money Saving Mom posted the details about an hour ago and it has taken me that long to get it to go through.  Their site is slow.  You may get error messages.  Goodluck Chuck if you think you can get through on the phone line (1-800-322-1189).  It pretty much says "All Operators Busy, Clbk" Disconnect.  If you start at Shopathome you can earn double cashback (12% I think) as part of the CyberMonday Week Promo.  So I guess I need to spill the beans on the deal.
  • Use code GIVEJOY to get $10 off a $10 order
  • Choose something like the Cypress Towel Set (Regularly $50) on CLEARANCE for $12.99
  • Choose Pick Up in Store
  • Pay $3.24 (after tax) for a luxury/high end set of 6 towels!!!!!
  • If you are sitting in front of the TV this is a super fun deal to try!
You can also choose to buy this and donate it to the Salvation Army. Just a thought!

Can Christmas be Christmas without Hershey's Chocolate

I have a confession, the box of Pot of Gold I picked up for the mailman is long gone.
Chocolate is the go to gift for hard to buy people on my list.  This time of year is busy and hectic.  According to the National Confectioners Association, the winter holidays represent the biggest boxed chocolate gifting season with more than 70 percent of adults giving or receiving a box of chocolates! Hershey’s Pot of Gold Truffles Sampler and Premium Collection gift boxes are perfect for last minute hostess gifts, unexpected holiday guests, and delicious stocking stuffers.  There are great promotions this month at Rite Aid and Walgreen's.  Stock up now to take the stress out of holiday shopping.  I always try to have a few wrapped boxes ready to go for "Uh-Oh I Can't Believe I Forgot To Buy You A Gift" moments.
Here are some folks that would love Hershey's Chocolate:
  • Family Members
  • Friends/Co-Workers
  • Host/Hostess
  • Teachers
  • Service Providers (i.e. mailman, hairstylist, bus drivers)
  • Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers
I have high hopes that this post will help me score a Hershey's prize pack.  I need to replace the mailman's missing gift.  Thank you Hershey's and Mom Blogger's Club for another fun giveaway. CLICK HERE to checkout the complete line of Hershey's Holiday Candy.

Macy's Heart of Haiti

Isn't this necklace beautiful? Simple, bit able to bring about a miracle.  Tis the season for that!

Macy's has some great goals with this campaign:
  • Heart of Haiti is helping to rebuild Haiti through "Trade, Not Aid." By providing an avenue for commerce and culture to create social change, Macy's is seeking to empower the people of Haiti to rebuild.
  • Heart of Haiti is creating opportunities for Haitian artisans to earn income.  This builds personal and national pride.  Power to the people!
  • The Heart of Haiti collection is an array of handmade products for the home -- quilts, metalwork, ceramics, and paintings -- created by Haitian artisans. Each item is designed by a Haitian master artisan and produced by hand in Haiti from recycled materials.
I am most impressed by the statistics, facts, and figures:
  • The Heart of Haiti collection has already led to employment of 350 artists in Haiti and has provided some financial benefits for an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in the country
  • Each item is designed by a master Haitian artist and made by hand in Haiti
  • Each product is made from recycled materials.
  • The collection includes 40 different home decor items and accessories
  • Products include vases, candleholders, serving trays, picture frames, mirrors, coasters, necklaces, clutch purses and more
  • Most items fall in the $25-$60 range
CLICK HERE to check out this great program!  I am pleased to share this great cause with my readers, in return I am entering a contest to win a piece of the Heart of Haiti collection.  Warm a heart that you love this holiday season with one of the beautiful pieces and help build the pride and self-help skills of the Haitian people.

Thank you to Mom Bloggers Club for sharing this program!

Next Direct- A Rave Review

Last month, Mom Magazine sent me a "Next Direct" catalog in a mom blogger SWAG box. They did not send a "gift code" or "free product" offer, so it took me a while to actually look through the book.  The cover seemed like the contents would be mostly high fashion women's clothing. I got the shock of my life when I realized that half of the catalog featured children's clothing.  Beautiful children's clothing.  At bargain basement prices.  Like cheaper than Walmart cheap! A quick search online returned a link for "refer a friend" that offered $10 off and FREE shipping.  I am in no way affiliated with this company, but I would be delighted to send you a referral email (we will both get a $10 off and free shipping offer).  Emma is growing like a bad weed. She is off the chart height wise and she actually "needed" clothes for once. The prices were hard to believe, but I decided to take my chances.  I placed an online order last Friday.  Fed-Ex delivered the order (signature required), from ENGLAND on Monday.  The quality is comparable to Gymboree, but their collections, color pallets, and mix-match features are better.  I cannot recommend this company highly enough.  I am happy to pay full retail (GASP!)
Take a peek at their online catalog.  You will fall in love!

Magazine Giveaway- A gift From Me for Three!

This morning I had a great offer from Amazon in my in-box.  If you know me, you know that we now have well over 30 free (weekly/monthly) magazine subscriptions.  My mail man thinks we're nuts.  We cannot possibly read them all and I have imposed a "no more for us" rule.  Yes, I will pass along the free offer info here, but I am not signing up for more.  With that in mind I would like to give a gift to 3 readers.

What's up for grabs?
  • One Six Month Subscription to Rolling Stone (MSRP $51.05)
  • One 12 WEEK Subscription to US Weekly (MSRP $47.00)
  • One 12 MONTH Subscription to Men's Journal (MSRP $47.40)
I will choose one winner at random (for each) on Thanksgiving 11/25/10 (around 9pm).  Each winner will receive their prize in the form of a gift subscription from me via Amazon.com.  The winner of each can choose to get the magazine sent to them or can choose to gift it to someone they know.  You can enter to win all three.  Good Luck!
